Getting There

Kimberley sits at roughly the geographic centre of South Africa, which means it is a long way from everything. The distances are real: Johannesburg is 500 km, Cape Town nearly 1,000 km, and Durban over 800 km.

By air: Kimberley Airport handles daily flights from Johannesburg with Airlink. The airport is small and efficient; the city centre is about 10 km away.

By rail: Kimberley station sits on the main Johannesburg–Cape Town railway line, one of the great long-distance train routes in southern Africa. Shosholoza Meyl and the luxury Rovos Rail and Blue Train services all pass through. The station building itself is worth a look — it dates from the diamond boom years.

By road: The N12 runs from Johannesburg through Kimberley toward Cape Town. From Johannesburg the drive is around five hours; from Cape Town, nine to ten. The N8 connects east to Bloemfontein (160 km) and west into the Karoo. Rental cars are available at the airport.
