St Cyprian's Cathedral

St Cyprian's Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Kimberley and Kuruman in the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, and one of Kimberley's finest Victorian buildings. It was built in stages from the 1880s as the diamond rush brought permanent wealth and settlement to what had been a tent city.

The cathedral sits in a quiet residential block a short walk from the city centre. Its sandstone construction has weathered pleasantly in the Northern Cape sun, and the interior is calm and surprisingly cool. The stained glass windows include some fine Victorian work, and the memorial plaques record names from the Siege of Kimberley and the broader Anglo-Boer War. It's a composed, unhurried building in a city that mostly tells a louder story.
