William Humphreys Art Gallery

The William Humphreys Art Gallery holds one of the best permanent collections of fine art outside South Africa's major cities, and is a genuine surprise in a city of Kimberley's size. The gallery opened in 1952, built around a gift from William Benbow Humphreys, a Northern Cape businessman who had collected Flemish and Dutch Old Masters, English portraiture, and South African painting over decades.

The South African section is particularly strong, covering the major movements from colonial landscape painting through the early twentieth century. The Flemish and Dutch holdings are genuine — not prints or reproductions — and there is a distinguished collection of Cape silver and Cape Dutch furniture. The building handles natural light thoughtfully. It's a quiet, well-curated gallery with real things in it, worth an hour of anyone's time.
