iSimangaliso Wetland Park

iSimangaliso Wetland Park covers 330,000 hectares of KwaZulu-Natal's northern coast, protecting a system of lakes, wetlands, coastal forests, and coral reefs that have remained largely intact for millions of years. Lake St Lucia at its heart is Africa's largest estuary — a shallow warm-water lake backed by high vegetated dunes on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other.

The park supports extraordinary wildlife diversity. Hippos and crocodiles lounge in the estuary; the dune forests hold rhino, elephant, leopard, and buffalo; leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches between November and February; and the offshore reefs offer some of the best snorkelling and diving in South Africa. Humpback whales pass through the waters from July to November.

The town of St Lucia serves as the main gateway, with boat tours of the estuary, guided beach walks to turtle nesting sites in season, and a scattering of lodges and guesthouses. It is a low-key and genuine place compared to the more polished safari destinations further south.

A story
iSimangaliso — meaning "miracle and wonder" in Zulu — holds the distinction of being South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, declared in 1999. Within its boundaries you can find hippos, crocodiles, whale sharks, and nesting leatherback turtles all within a few kilometres of each other, a combination found nowhere else on earth.
