When to Go

KwaZulu-Natal is a year-round destination, but the timing matters depending on what you want to see.

Summer (October to March) is hot, humid, and prone to afternoon thunderstorms — particularly in the Drakensberg, where electrical storms can be spectacular but dangerous on high ground. The coast is at its most lush, game parks are green, and turtle-nesting season runs from November to February on the iSimangaliso beaches. It's the busiest and most expensive period around Christmas and New Year.

Winter (May to August) brings dry, clear weather and cool temperatures, especially in the mountains. This is the best time for hiking in the Drakensberg, when the risk of afternoon storms is low. Game viewing improves as animals concentrate around water sources. The sardine run — one of the world's great wildlife spectacles — typically runs from June to July along the coast.

Shoulder seasons (April and September) often offer the best combination of pleasant weather, lower prices, and fewer crowds. Autumn is particularly good for the Midlands and Drakensberg.

The KwaZulu-Natal coast stays swimmable all year — water temperatures rarely drop below 20°C even in winter.
