Getting There

Oudtshoorn is 360 kilometres east of Cape Town along the N2 and then the N12 through the Outeniqua Mountains — about four hours by car. The Huguenot Tunnel near Paarl shortens the journey slightly. The more scenic route goes over the Outeniqua Pass at George, which adds a few minutes but is considerably more spectacular.

By car is by far the most practical option, as you will need wheels to reach the caves and farms. Intercape and Translux buses run from Cape Town and from Port Elizabeth, stopping at the town centre. The journey from Cape Town takes around five to six hours. There is a small airport at Oudtshoorn with irregular scheduled services — check current schedules before relying on it.
