Correctional Services Museum

Specialist Pretoria museum tracing South Africa's prison system through objects, craft, and confiscated contraband.

The Correctional Services Museum is one of Pretoria's more unusual specialist museums, set beside the Kgosi Mampuru II prison complex. Its displays follow the development of South Africa's penal system, from harsh early punishments to modern prison administration, using uniforms, documents, prisoner-made craft, and confiscated objects.

It is not for everyone, and it is certainly less polished than the city's main national museums. But if you are interested in institutional history, it offers a revealing look at a part of South African society most travellers never see.
