The Wonderboom is Pretoria's famous old wild fig, a single tree that spread outward as its heavy branches touched the ground, rooted, and formed a ring of daughter trunks. The result is less a tree than a living grove, protected inside Wonderboom Nature Reserve.
The reserve also has short walking trails, picnic spots, and views over the northern suburbs. Come early in the day, especially in summer, and bring water; the tree is the headline, but the hill and birdlife make the visit worthwhile.
