Getting There

The easiest way to visit Soweto from central Johannesburg is by guided tour — operators pick you up from your hotel and provide context that substantially improves the experience. Most tours last half a day and cover the main Orlando West sites.

To go independently, take the Rea Vaya bus rapid transit from Park Station in central Johannesburg to Soweto; several routes reach the area. Metered taxis and Uber are available but the ride from the city centre takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. The Gautrain network does not extend to Soweto.

Getting around within Soweto by public transport is difficult — the township is large and spread out. Most independent visitors take a taxi or Uber to the Hector Pieterson Museum area and explore the Orlando West neighbourhood on foot.
