The house of Archbishop Desmond Tutu at 7882 Vilakazi Street stands a short walk from Mandela House in Orlando West. Tutu still uses the house and it is not open to visitors, but it is clearly marked and most guided tours of Soweto include it as part of the Vilakazi Street walk.
Tutu's Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in 1984 for his non-violent opposition to apartheid, combined with Mandela's Prize (awarded in 1993) make Vilakazi Street the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize laureates. The fact that both men lived in this modest working-class neighbourhood — not in wealth or privilege — is part of what makes the street remarkable.
