The Stellenbosch Village Museum is one of the best local history museums in South Africa, occupying a block of historic buildings in the town centre. Four houses representing different periods of Cape Dutch domestic life from 1709 to 1929 have been restored and furnished to period, giving visitors a genuine sense of how the town developed over two and a half centuries.
The oldest house in the complex, the Schreuderhuis, dates to 1709 and is among the oldest domestic structures in the country still standing. The museum also covers the cultural and social history of Stellenbosch, including the role of the Khoi, San, and Cape Malay communities who lived alongside the Dutch settlers. Good exhibits, thoughtfully presented.
Note: the coordinates above are approximate — the museum is on Ryneveld Street in the town centre.
