Khartoum 3 (Al-Khartoum Thalatha) is the most affluent of the original numbered districts, just south of Khartoum 2 and west of the airport. Wide streets, large villas, well-watered gardens — the contrast with the sprawling unplanned suburbs further out is sharp. Many of Sudan's senior officials and wealthier business families live here, and several embassies have moved out from the older diplomatic quarter to take advantage of the space.
For visitors the area is interesting mainly as a contrast to the downtown — quieter, greener, with the occasional good restaurant tucked into a converted villa. The Burri area to the north blends into the river, with a long stretch of corniche where families gather at sundown.
