Mantenga Nature Reserve and Falls

A nature reserve combining a 95-metre waterfall with a living Swazi cultural village

Mantenga Nature Reserve, at the northern end of the Ezulwini Valley, packages two things together: a genuinely impressive waterfall and a recreated traditional Swazi village where aspects of homestead life — food preparation, beer-making, craft work, and traditional dance — are demonstrated for visitors. The two elements are independent enough that you can do one without the other.

The Mantenga Falls drop about 95 metres in two cascades and are a 20-minute walk from the car park through riverine vegetation. They are more impressive in person than most photos suggest, particularly after the rains. The cultural village, called Mantenga Cultural Village, was built to preserve and demonstrate traditional Swazi practices that have largely disappeared from daily life. The demonstrations are staged but not embarrassing — the crafts are genuine and the people running it are from local communities.
