Ezulwini Valley

SiSwati Valley of Heaven, the country's cultural corridor between Mbabane, Lobamba, craft markets, and Mlilwane.

The Ezulwini Valley — Valley of Heaven in siSwati — stretches south from Mbabane toward Lobamba and is the cultural and tourist heart of the country. The main road (MR103) through the valley is lined with craft markets, hotels, the royal residences, and the entrance to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Swazi Market (also called the Ezulwini Craft Market) along the road is worth a stop. The prices are negotiable and the selection of textiles, wood carvings, ceramics, and jewellery is better here than most other places in the country. Bargaining is expected and usually good-natured.

Mantenga Nature Reserve sits at the northern end of the valley and combines the Mantenga Falls with a living cultural village where traditional Swazi homestead life is demonstrated. The falls are a 20-minute walk from the car park, and they are genuinely impressive rather than just a backdrop for a show.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary adjoins the valley and is the country's oldest protected area. You can walk, cycle, or ride horses through the reserve without a guide — the absence of predators makes it unusually accessible. Warthogs and nyala graze within sight of the rest camp.

Lobamba, the traditional and legislative capital, is at the southern end of the valley. The National Museum and Somhlolo Stadium are here, and this is the site of both the Incwala and Umhlanga ceremonies.

Guide

Getting There

The Ezulwini Valley lies between Mbabane, Eswatini's administrative capital, and Manzini, its commercial hub. The MR103 runs the length of the valley and is in reasonable condition. From Mbabane it is about 12 kilometres to the northern end of the valley; from Manzini about 25 kilometres to the southern end. Minibus taxis run frequently between the two cities and stop along the main road, making it possible to reach individual attractions without a car — though a car gives you much more flexibility, especially for Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary.
