Manzini Market

The Manzini Market, held on Mondays and Fridays in the town centre, is one of the best markets in southern Africa for genuine local commerce rather than tourist-facing craft stalls. Arrive in the morning for the widest selection and the most activity. You will find fresh produce — tomatoes, sweet potatoes, leafy greens — alongside dried fish, traditional grains, and enormous quantities of secondhand clothing that arrive in bales from European charity donations.

The craft section sells siSwati basketwork, carved wooden items, and traditional beadwork at prices considerably lower than the tourist shops in the Ezulwini Valley. Do not expect price tags — bargaining is normal.

A story
Manzini's market operates twice weekly and has done so in various forms since the town was founded as Bremersdorp in the 1880s — named for the German trader Albert Bremer, who established the first store here. The market's continuity reflects its role not as a tourist attraction but as essential infrastructure: it is where people in Eswatini actually buy food, household goods, and clothing.
