Mbabane sits among the Dlangeni Hills at 1,200 metres, and the hills immediately around the capital offer rewarding walking without the need to drive anywhere. Several informal trails lead up from the residential suburbs onto the ridge lines, where the views stretch over the city, the surrounding grassland, and — on a clear day — far into the neighbouring highlands.
The vegetation is typical highveld: open montane grassland punctuated by rocky outcrops and patches of indigenous forest in the kloofs. You are likely to see various bird species, and the wildflowers in spring (September to November) can be impressive. The hills are generally safe for daytime walking, though it is sensible to go in pairs and to stick to established paths. Ask at your accommodation for the current best access points.
