Soni Falls

About 12 km south of Lushoto, on the road in from Mombo, the small town of Soni sits at a curve in the Bangala River that drops over a sequence of waterfalls into a forested gorge. The falls are not large but the setting is lovely — black rock walls, hanging ferns, the noise of the cataract muting everything else.

There is a Tuesday market at Soni that draws traders from villages all over the south Usambaras and is a more authentic spectacle than the Lushoto market itself. Combine the two: walk down from Lushoto via the forest paths in about four hours, swim at the falls, buy fruit, hop on a dala-dala back up.
