Getting to Mikindani-Mtwara requires effort, which is both warning and promise. Mtwara Airport (IATA: MYW) has scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam operated by Precision Air and occasionally other carriers. The flight takes about 90 minutes and is the most reliable way to arrive. Check schedules carefully as they change frequently and frequencies are limited.
Overland from Dar es Salaam, the journey is long — roughly 500 km via the main southern road, with sections in poor condition particularly after heavy rain. Buses run daily but the trip takes 10–14 hours under good conditions. The Tanzam Highway (TANZAM) runs close to the northern edge of the region.
A ferry service once connected Mtwara with Dar es Salaam but has been unreliable in recent years; check current conditions locally. Coming from Mozambique, the Ruvuma River crossing at Kilambo-Unity Bridge is the main border crossing.
