Moshi Central Market

Moshi's Central Market is the lively commercial heart of the town, covering several blocks near the bus station and filling up from early morning. The market sells produce, spices, clothing, household goods, and craft items — including Kilimanjaro coffee, which you can buy raw or roasted and which makes an excellent purchase since the quality is genuinely high. The Maasai and Chagga traders who work the market give it a cultural texture that is quite different from the tourist-oriented shops around the clock tower.

The market is busiest in the morning and can be quite crowded. Haggling is standard for everything except food prices. It is worth an hour of wandering even if you do not intend to buy anything; the atmosphere is representative of a real Tanzanian market town, not a tourist experience.

A story
Kilimanjaro coffee — grown on the mountain's southern slopes by Chagga smallholders — is among Africa's finest. The market sells green and roasted beans at a fraction of what you will pay at any café in Moshi, and buying directly from farmers or small traders is possible with a bit of Swahili or through a guide. This is real coffee country; the crop has been grown here since the 18th century.
