Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tour

The Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tour is the most popular half-day excursion from Moshi. The route leads up through the Chagga village of Materuni on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, about 15 kilometres northwest of town, passing through coffee and banana plantations before reaching the 80-metre waterfall. The walk from the village is about an hour through lush vegetation; a local guide is included and mandatory.

The coffee tour component visits working smallholder plots and takes you through the entire traditional process from cherry to cup. This is not a polished agri-tourism experience — it is a genuine working farm, and the authenticity is the point. The waterfall itself is beautiful, with a swimming pool at the base. The full half-day tour (guide, coffee, waterfall, lunch at a local family's home) costs very little by Western standards.

A story
The Chagga people of Kilimanjaro's slopes have been growing coffee here for centuries — long before it became an export crop. The Materuni tour typically includes a demonstration of traditional coffee processing: picking, pulping, fermenting, drying, roasting over a wood fire, and grinding by hand. The cup at the end, drunk from a carved gourd in a Chagga homestead, tastes better than any airport espresso.
