South Beach

The wild, undeveloped shoreline south of town — no facilities, no crowds, just coast.

The beach south of Pangani is less visited than Ushongo to the north, which makes it even more deserted. The shoreline curves south along a series of low headlands backed by coconut palms and scrub. The swimming is good in calm conditions and the water is clear, though there are no facilities of any kind once you leave town.

To reach it, walk south from the town center along the track that follows the coastline. The first decent stretch of beach is about 20 minutes on foot. The further south you go, the more isolated it becomes. Local fishermen use the beach early in the morning; by mid-morning you are likely to have it to yourself. This is not a beach for those who want sun-loungers and cold drinks — it is a beach for those who want to be alone with the ocean. Bring water, sun protection, and everything else you need before you leave town.
