The Boma stands near the waterfront, slightly elevated above the town, and its condition is better than many buildings of comparable age in the region. It has been used for various administrative purposes since independence and may not always be open to enter, but the exterior and its setting are worth seeing regardless.
What makes the Boma interesting is not the architecture alone but its position in the town's sequence of colonial occupations — first Arab traders, then German administrators, then British colonial rule, then independence. Pangani changed hands repeatedly and each era left something behind. The Boma is the most visible German-era remnant, but look also for the German graves in the old cemetery on the edge of town. A local guide can show you both in under an hour.
