Matemwe is about 60 km north-east of Stone Town, an hour and a half by car along reasonable tarmac roads. Most travellers come on a pre-arranged taxi transfer from their hotel — fixed rates apply, agree in advance.
For the more adventurous, a daladala (shared minibus) goes from Stone Town to Mkokotoni and then on to Matemwe, a slow and crowded journey for the price of a coffee. From Nungwi or Kendwa, a taxi takes about 30–40 minutes.
