The Catholic cathedral is the most substantial legacy of Aneho's years as the German colonial capital of Togoland. Built in the late 19th century, it is a solid, plain structure in colonial mission style, with thick whitewashed walls that keep the interior cool even in the midday heat. The Diocese of Aneho, one of the oldest Catholic dioceses in West Africa, still has its seat here, giving the building an ongoing institutional importance out of proportion to the town's size.
The cathedral sits near the centre of the old administrative quarter, surrounded by other remnants of the colonial grid — broad streets lined with trees, a handful of surviving European-style buildings, and the general atmosphere of a town that once had greater ambitions. Mass is held regularly and the church is generally accessible during daylight hours.
