Klouto is the centre of small-scale eco-tourism around Kpalimé. The village itself is unremarkable, but the forest above it is a beautiful patchwork of cocoa plantations, secondary growth, and pockets of older trees. Guides — many of them entomologists in another life — meet visitors at the village entrance and lead walks of two to six hours.
Bring closed shoes, long sleeves for the morning mist, and small notes for the guide and any villagers who offer fruit. The butterflies are best in the rainy season (April to October); the forest paths are slippery then, but the colour and density are unmatched.
