Chebika Oasis and Waterfall

The Chebika oasis is a small but vivid splash of green against the rust-coloured cliffs of the Djebel en Negueb range. Springs push up through ancient rock and feed a narrow gorge filled with date palms, oleanders, and rushes before the water disappears back into the desert floor. The effect — the sound of running water, the shade, the sudden green after miles of bare desert — is striking.

A path leads into the gorge from the car park and climbs to a small waterfall that drops into a pool. The water is clean and cold; the pool makes an inviting spot in the heat of summer. Beyond the waterfall the path continues into the hills, with views back over the oasis and across the flat desert plain toward Algeria.

The site is sign-posted and easy to find; there is a parking area at the entrance with stalls selling dates, fossils, and souvenirs. Allow an hour to explore the gorge and climb to the waterfall viewpoint.

A story
The Chebika oasis sits at the foot of the Djebel en Negueb, and its springs have supported human settlement here for thousands of years. The Romans knew the place as Ad Speculum — "at the mirror" — perhaps a reference to the reflective quality of the spring-fed pool, or to the way the oasis acts as a signal mirror of life against the surrounding desert.
