Chenini Gabès

Chenini Gabès is not the famous troglodyte village of the south — that one is near Tataouine. This Chenini is the oasis village folded into the palm grove of Gabès, on the inland edge of the city. It is the most attractive corner of greater Gabès, with whitewashed houses, blue-painted doors, and lanes that wind under palm fronds.

You can reach it on foot from the centre of Gabès in about half an hour, walking through the oasis along irrigation channels and past small market gardens. Or take a calèche from the edge of the city. The village has a few simple cafés where you can stop for mint tea, and the small dam and waterfall above the village — fed by the oasis springs when they are flowing — make a pleasant short walk in the cooler months.
