Sailors' Cemetery

The Marine Cemetery occupies a gentle slope between the Borj el Kebir and the sea. Whitewashed graves, most of them undated, lean toward the water in irregular rows; sea spray salts the stones in winter and bleaches them white in summer.

Come at sunset. The mix of light, sea, and tilted gravestones is one of the most photographed scenes in Tunisia, and at that hour there are usually only a few visitors. Local fishermen still tend the older graves of relatives lost at sea.
