Silk Weavers of Rue Sidi Jaber

Mahdia is the historical centre of Tunisian silk weaving, and a handful of workshops still operate on Rue Sidi Jaber and the surrounding lanes. Pedal-driven wooden looms clatter through the morning; you can wander in, watch a meter of cloth take shape, and buy direct from the weavers — scarves, sashes, and the traditional white wedding fouta worn by Mahdia brides.

Prices are far below what you would pay in Tunis or Sousse. Mornings only — by mid-afternoon the workshops have closed and the lanes belong to children playing football.
