Hotel Sidi Driss

A working hotel built into a series of interconnected craters of the Matmata troglodyte type. The five pit courtyards have been lightly knocked through and now serve as bar, restaurant, and accommodation. Even if you do not stay, you can walk through the courtyards during the day for a small fee (or buy a coffee at the bar and get the same access).

The Star Wars fittings — paint, props, a few fibreglass set pieces — are concentrated in the second pit. Be warned that the hotel itself is basic: rooms are tiny cells off the courtyards, plumbing is rudimentary, and the food is mediocre. The appeal is sleeping inside the set, not luxury.

A story
George Lucas filmed Luke Skywalker's home interiors here in 1976 for the original Star Wars. He came back in 2000 for Attack of the Clones and the production crew repainted the props that the hotel had quietly preserved for two decades. The original Lars homestead pieces — the table, the moisture vaporators — are still in the lower courtyards.
