Troglodyte House Visit

Several families in Matmata open their homes to visitors for a small fee — the most established are the Hadji Mohammed and Maison Berbère residences, signposted from the centre. A guided 15-minute walk-through shows the central sunken courtyard, the radiating bedrooms with their olive-wood lintels, the rope-accessed grain stores, and the women's kitchen and weaving room.

It is touristy but worth doing: you understand the architecture and the climate logic only after standing in the courtyard. Tip the family on the way out — this is their household income.

A story
The Berber population dug into the soft sandstone of the hills after 17th-century Arab incursions pushed them off the coastal plain. The pit-courtyard plan provides a defensible, near-invisible house — and naturally maintains 20°C year-round, while the surface temperature swings from 5°C in winter to 45°C in summer.
