Ksar Hadada is the most famous of the ksour around Medenine, partly for itself and partly because George Lucas filmed the slave quarters of The Phantom Menace among its ghorfas. The complex is large and well-preserved, with cells arranged around several connected courtyards. Some have been converted into a basic hotel; most are empty.
Even without the Star Wars angle, the ksar is worth the drive south from Medenine. The ghorfas are larger and more elaborately built than in Metameur, and the multi-courtyard layout makes for interesting wandering. The film tourists tend to come in tour buses and the place can be crowded for an hour at a stretch in the middle of the day — go early or late if you can. The drive itself, through the dry steppe of the south, is part of the experience.
