Moknine is the pottery capital of the Tunisian Sahel, and visiting the workshops is the main reason to stop here. The town's potters produce an enormous variety of work: functional cooking pots and water jars in the older tradition, and decorative painted ceramics in the colourful modern style that has spread across the region. Several dozen workshops operate in and around the town, concentrated along the main road and in the streets near the market.
Most workshops welcome visitors and are used to showing their process. You will see potters working on foot-powered wheels, pieces drying in the sun before firing, and kilns operating at the back of the buildings. Prices are lower here than in the tourist shops of Sousse or Monastir, and the quality of the better work is significantly higher. The Wednesday and Sunday markets are the best days to visit.
