Mides Canyon

Narrow canyon beside the border village of Mides, usually visited on the Tamerza oasis circuit.

Mides Canyon lies a short drive from Tamerza, beside the border village of Mides. The canyon is narrow and sharply cut, with sheer walls dropping into a dry wadi that twists below the village. From above, the view is excellent: palms, cliff, and the sudden line of the gorge all compressed into a small, powerful landscape.

Most visitors see Mides as part of the same circuit as Tamerza and Chebika. It deserves more than a photo stop. Walk along the rim if conditions are dry, but do not enter the lower canyon after rain or if a guide advises against it. Flash floods here are not theoretical; they are the force that shaped the place.

A story
The village of Mides is often linked to film locations in southern Tunisia, but its older story is geological. The canyon walls expose layers of marine sediment and desert erosion, a reminder that this dry frontier has shifted between sea floor, riverbed, and desert over immense spans of time.
