Forum and Capitol

The Roman public centre of Utica sat just east of the residential quarter, on a platform overlooking the silted plain. The forum has been partially excavated; you can read the rectangular outline of paving and a row of column bases that once edged the portico.

The Capitol — the standard Roman triad temple to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva — stood at one end. Its podium is still visible, though stripped of its marble revetment centuries ago. It is more evocative than impressive, but standing here helps you understand that Utica was a real Roman city, not just a curiosity from the Punic Wars.
