The Bulawayo Railway Museum, located at the railway station, is one of the most charming small museums in Zimbabwe. It celebrates the role of the railway in opening up Matabeleland — first as a colonial tool, then as the economic lifeline of a region without sea ports. The collection of vintage locomotives includes some magnificent early 20th-century steam engines, lovingly maintained and displayed outside on the tracks.
Inside, exhibits cover the history of the railways from the first line into Bulawayo in 1897, through the Rhodesian era, to independence. Old timetables, photographs, uniforms, and equipment bring the railway age to life in a way that is more vivid than you might expect. The museum is compact and not crowded; it is a good place to spend an hour if you are waiting for a train or simply looking for something different from wildlife and national parks.
