Chipinda Pools is the main entrance and hub for the northern half of Gonarezhou. A series of natural rock pools in the Runde River, shaded by large figs, acacias, and sycamore trees, it is a reliable water source year-round and consequently a magnet for wildlife. Hippos maintain permanent residence in the deeper pools; crocodiles bask on every suitable rock; and elephant herds arrive at the river's edge throughout the day in the dry season, sometimes a hundred or more at a time.
The unfenced campsite here is one of the best wilderness camping experiences in Zimbabwe. At night, lions calling across the river and elephants moving through camp (which they do) are routine — not dangers to be worried about, but the reality of sleeping in genuine bush without a fence between you and the animals. This is part of the appeal for the self-sufficient traveller, but it demands clear-headedness and respect for the environment.
The pools serve as the starting point for game drives toward the Chilojo Cliffs and along the Runde valley. The track east along the river is one of the park's most productive wildlife corridors, and the birding from the riverbank is outstanding — African fish eagles, yellow-billed storks, African skimmer, and various kingfishers are all regular sightings. The ZimParks office at Chipinda is where permits are checked; book your campsite in advance through the ZimParks website.
