Great Zimbabwe Site Museum

Small but important museum at the entrance, displaying original finds from the ruins

The museum at the entrance to Great Zimbabwe contains the most important finds from the site: original soapstone carved birds (the most famous emblem of Zimbabwe), gold beads and wire ornaments, Arab coins and Chinese porcelain that attest to the site's role in Indian Ocean trade, and tools and ceramics from the Shona inhabitants. It is well worth spending 30 minutes here before walking the ruins.

The full Zimbabwe Birds — or at least most of them — are not here. Most remain in the collection of the Zimbabwe Museum of Human Sciences in Harare, while others have been returned from South Africa. The museum explains the colonial history of the ruins' interpretation, including how early European archaeologists denied that Africans could have built such sophisticated structures, attributing them instead to Phoenicians, Queen of Sheba, or other non-African civilisations — a denial that Zimbabwe's independence explicitly reversed.
