Mausoleum of Timur Shah

A solid, octagonal brick tomb just south of the Kabul river, holding the grave of Timur Shah, the Durrani king who moved the Afghan capital from Kandahar to Kabul in 1776. The dome rises above a small landscaped park that was restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in the late 2000s — one of the few well-kept green spaces in the city centre.

The building itself is plain compared to the great mausolea of Iran or India, which is part of the point: a working monument to the founder of modern Kabul. The park around it is the kind of place locals come to sit on a bench and watch the traffic, which is in itself one of the city's small pleasures.
