Getting There

By air — Kandahar International Airport (KDH) receives domestic flights from Kabul. International connections existed before 2021 but have largely ceased under Taliban governance. Anyone flying into Kandahar should have their itinerary and permissions arranged well in advance.

By road — The main highway linking Kandahar to Kabul (Highway 1, the Ring Road) passes through Ghazni and takes roughly 6–8 hours by road. The route to Herat via Highway 1 west is approximately 550 km and takes a full day. Both routes pass through areas that have historically been difficult; current conditions should be verified before travel.

Entry requirements — Afghanistan is among the most difficult countries in the world to enter as a foreign national. Visas are not issued in the usual way, and all entry should be coordinated through specialist operators or official channels.
