Sher Khan Bandar is the river port and border crossing on the Panj River — the upper Amu Darya — about 60 kilometres north of Kunduz city. A bridge built with American aid in 2007 connects Afghanistan to Tajikistan here, replacing an older ferry crossing that for centuries carried trade between Central Asia and the Hindu Kush.
The site is interesting more for its geography than its sights: a low, dusty plain where two countries and several languages meet, with cotton fields running to the riverbank. The crossing is sometimes open and sometimes not, and is one of only a handful of legal land entries from Tajikistan into Afghanistan.
