Kunduz

Northeastern Afghan trading city on fertile Kunduz River plains, near Kushan and Greco-Buddhist sites.

Kunduz is a major city in northeastern Afghanistan, sitting on the fertile plains where the Kunduz River flows toward the Amu Darya. Historically it was a prosperous trading centre on the routes between Central Asia and the Hindu Kush, and the surrounding area has significant archaeological sites from the Kushan and Greco-Buddhist periods.

The city has been heavily affected by decades of conflict and changed hands multiple times during the war. Travel to Kunduz is currently extremely dangerous and effectively impossible for tourists. The security situation should be thoroughly researched and professional advice sought before considering any travel to Afghanistan.

For those who do find themselves here, the nearby ancient site of Kunduz Bala Hissar and the river trade port towards the Amu Darya at Sher Khan Bandar hint at the region's older identity as a Silk Road junction.
