Friday Mosque

The principal mosque of Maimana, anchoring the city centre

The Jami Masjid, or Friday Mosque, sits at the heart of Maimana's old town, a few minutes' walk from the main bazaar. It is not architecturally famous in the way that the Friday Mosque of Herat is — the building is a plain northern Afghan mosque, with a simple courtyard, an iwan, and a domed prayer hall, much rebuilt over the decades. But it has been the religious centre of the city for generations and is the natural orientation point in the centre.

Non-Muslim visitors should ask before entering the courtyard, dress modestly, and avoid Friday prayer times. The square outside the mosque is a good place to sit briefly and watch the city's rhythms — old men in turbans and chapans heading to and from prayer, traders carrying bundles of cloth, motorbikes weaving through the foot traffic.
