Sherubtse College

About an hour's drive south of Tashigang in Kanglung, Sherubtse College is Bhutan's first degree-granting institution. It was founded in 1966 by a small group of Canadian Jesuits led by Father William Mackey, and for decades it was the only place a Bhutanese student could complete a university education without leaving the country.

The campus itself is quiet and not a tourist sight, but it is interesting to walk around if you are passing through Kanglung. The setting, on a high pine-covered ridge with views down into the valleys, is striking. The college shop sells inexpensive prints of student artwork and the occasional locally-published book on eastern Bhutanese culture.
