Kota Batu Archaeological Park

The Kota Batu Archaeological Park marks the site of Brunei's ancient capital, occupied from the 14th to the 17th centuries. This was the centre of the Brunei Sultanate during its golden age, when the empire's reach extended across Borneo and into the Philippines. The excavations have revealed ceramics, coins, and structural remains from that period.

The park is compact and not heavily developed — this is a genuine archaeological site rather than a theme park reconstruction. What you see is mostly low foundations, interpretive signage, and some restored structures. It rewards visitors who engage with the context provided by the adjacent Brunei Museum before wandering the site itself. The combination of the two makes a much stronger impression than either alone.

A story
The 1578 Battle of Kota Batu was fought here when a Spanish-Portuguese expedition from the Philippines attacked the Brunei Sultanate in an attempt to break its dominance over regional trade. The attackers initially captured the capital but were driven out within weeks — the last serious external military challenge to the sultanate before the colonial era.
