Wat Samrong Knong is an active temple north of Battambang with a darker layer of twentieth-century history. The site is associated with Khmer Rouge killings, and its memorial gives the visit a weight that contrasts sharply with the peaceful monastery grounds.
It is not as visually grand as Phnom Sampeau or Wat Banan, but it adds important context to Battambangs recent past. Go respectfully, keep your voice low around memorial areas, and combine it with other northern sights if you have a driver for half a day.
