Central Market (Phsar Thmei)

Art Deco market under one of Asia's largest yellow domes

The Phsar Thmei — "new market" in Khmer — is one of the great market buildings of Southeast Asia. Four covered wings radiate from a vast central rotunda crammed with gold and silver jewellery stalls. The wings sell everything from electronics and watches to flowers, T-shirts and household goods, with the surrounding outdoor stalls handling fresh produce, fish and meat.

Even if you have no intention of buying anything, the building is worth a visit. Come early in the morning to see it at its busiest, or late afternoon when the slanting light makes the yellow dome glow. Bargain hard and check goods carefully — fake watches and electronics are common.

A story
When Phsar Thmei opened in 1937 it was briefly the largest covered market in Asia. The cruciform design and 26-metre central dome were the work of French architects Louis Chauchon and Jean Desbois, working in a pale yellow Art Deco style now intimately associated with Phnom Penh. A 2009 restoration funded by France peeled away decades of grime and water damage to restore the original colour.
