Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre

Large wildlife rescue centre south of Phnom Penh, caring for animals seized from illegal trade.

Phnom Tamao is Cambodia's main wildlife rescue centre, set in forest south of Phnom Penh. It cares for animals rescued from trafficking and illegal keeping, including bears, elephants, gibbons, crocodiles, and big cats, with work supported by the Forestry Administration and Wildlife Alliance.

This is a day trip, not a quick city sight. The distance and heat make transport planning important, but it is one of the better choices around Phnom Penh for travellers who want to understand Cambodia's wildlife trade problem without supporting a circus-style animal show.
