Voen Sai and the Tonle Kong

About 40 km north of Ban Lung on a dusty road, Voen Sai is a small riverside settlement on the Tonle Kong with a unique mix of Lao, Cambodian, and Chinese ethnic communities — each in its own village along the river. Long-tail boats can take you upstream to visit traditional cemeteries with carved wooden grave-figures of the Kachok and Jarai people, hidden in the forest above the riverbank.

This is a half-day trip best done with a guide who can navigate the cultural sensitivities — the cemeteries are sacred sites and not all are open to visitors. The Cambodian Rural Development Team in Ban Lung can arrange ethical visits.
