Chimelong Ocean Kingdom

Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, on Hengqin Island on the western edge of the city, is one of the most visited theme parks in China and claims several world records for its aquarium facilities. The centrepiece is the whale shark exhibit, where multiple whale sharks move through an enormous tank behind a curved panoramic window approximately 39 metres wide and 8.3 metres tall. The effect is less like being in an aquarium and more like standing in front of a very large, very slowly moving natural phenomenon.

Beyond the whale sharks, the park has manta rays, polar bear exhibits, a water ride section, and numerous other marine animal displays. It is unambiguously a commercial entertainment facility rather than a conservation institution, but it is executed with more care than most, and the sheer scale of some exhibits is difficult to find elsewhere. Expect full-day crowds on weekends and school holidays; arrive at opening for the best experience. The park is on Hengqin Island, connected to the main city by bridge and worth combining with a visit to the New Yuanming Palace nearby.

A story
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom holds multiple Guinness World Records, including for the world's largest aquarium tank (volume), the largest underwater viewing dome, and the largest collection of whale sharks in captivity. The whale shark exhibit — a tank so large that the sharks turn in slow circles against a floor-to-ceiling window — has a scale that is genuinely difficult to process as a built structure.
